*Scene opens on a quiet Copenhagen evening. The golden light of dusk spills through the windows of Signe and Magnuss modern apartment in Østerbro.*
Signe loved her husband deeply. She often pinched herself, wondering how shed been lucky enough to marry him. Magnus was everythingkind, devoted, always putting her first.
But with his family? Luck ran thin. People say every family has its black sheep. In Magnuss case, he was the only normal onethe rest were all varying shades of chaos.
Take his father, for instance. Every time Jørgen saw Signe, hed grin and pat her stomach. *”Getting a little soft there, eh? Bet theres a little one hiding in there!”*
Signe hadnt gained a single kilo since the wedding. But logic never stopped Jørgen. Whether she was toned or tired, the joke remainedalongside his habit of stripping to the waist inside the house, his belly hanging over his shorts like an overproofed loaf of bread.
Then there was his mother, Birgitte. A self-appointed expert on *everything*.
*”That lipstick is too dark for you, Signe.”*
*”Why dont you try bangs? Your hair is so flat.”*
When theyd moved into the apartment, Birgitte had toured every room like a disapproving inspector, clucking over the lack of *hygge* in their minimalist Scandi decor.
And Magnuss sister, Mie? A whirlwind of irresponsibility. Two kids, two fathersneither of whom stuck around. She dragged them everywhere, expecting royal treatment. Priority seating on the metro. First in line at the bakery. Free handouts wherever she went.
Despite child support and state benefits, Mie still hunted for freebies like treasure. Their apartment was cluttered with diapers her kids outgrew, half-used creams, and clothes she swore shed resell. *”Its my business,”* shed say, stuffing yet another discarded toy into her tote bag.
Her kids were feral. At Signes housewarming, theyd demolished a fresh vase, smeared jam on the couch, and pocketed her silver teaspoons. Mie hadnt batted an eye.
So, when Signes birthday neared, she made a quiet decision: *No in-laws.*
She waited until Magnus was relaxed, curled beside her on the sofa. *”Jeg vil gerne fejre min fødselsdag herhjemme. Bare mine forældre og nogle venner.”*
Magnus smiled. *”God idé. Vi har jo gjort lejligheden så flotdet skal da nyde.”*
She hesitated. *”… Jeg vil ikke invitere dine forældre.”*
A pause, then his slow nod. *”Det er okay. Jeg forstår.”*
She exhaled. *”Jeg kan ikke holde ud at være på vagt hele tiden.”*
*”Du skal ikke undskylde.”* His hand found hers. *”De er… svære.”*
Signe almost cried. How had this man come from *them*?
She never mentioned the party to his familyeven asked Magnus not to. But secrets dont stay buried in Denmark.
Birgitte called Signes mother about a knitting pattern and let slip. The fallout was swift.
*”Sådan behandler din kone os?!”* Birgitte shrieked into the phone. *”Vi er ikke gode nok?!”*
Magnus tried to intervene. *”Mor, det er hendes dag. Hun må selv bestemme.”*
*”Sig til hende, at vi er dybt sårede!”*
The line went dead. Magnus rubbed his temples.
He wouldnt ruin Signes birthday. Hed tell her later.
The morning of her twenty-sixth, he gave her tulips and a spa voucher. *”Du har brug for dét.”*
Guests arrived in the afternoon. Wine flowed, smørrebrød gleamed on the table. Signe glowed in her cream silk dress.
Thenthe doorbell.
*”Det må være kagen,”* she chirped, swinging the door open.
Her smile died.
There they stood. All of them.
*”Tillykke med fødselsdagen!”* Birgitte thrust a single drooping rose at her. *”Må vi komme ind?”*
Signe stepped aside. Chaos erupted.
Mies kids beelined for the buffet, grabbing pastries with sticky hands. Jørgen leered at Signes dress. *”Den er for stram, skat. Manden ved Føtex har en pænere i plus-size.”*
Birgitte wrinkled her nose at the floors. *”Du inviterer gæster men glemmer at gøre rent?”*
The kids screeched, digging through drawers. Little Emil wailed*”Hvor er kagen?!”*
*”Du kunne da have købt en,”* Mie snapped, then eyed Signes perfume. *”Den er fin. Jeg tager den.”*
Signe stood frozen.
Then Magnus saw itMies fingers curling around an envelope of kroner from the gift table.
*”Læg det TILBAGE!”*
*”Jeg ville bare lægge mere i”*
*”FÆRDIG.”* His palm slammed the table. Silence. *”Ud. Nu.”*
Birgitte gaped. *”Hvad bilder du dig ind?!”*
*”I kommer uinviteret. I ydmyger min kone. *Forsvind.*”*
The protests were loud. The slamming door, louder.
Signes birthday was ruined. But as her friends hugged her, she caught Magnuss gaze.
Hed chosen her. Over blood. Over tradition. Over the weight of *”sådan gør man ikke i Danmark.”*
And thatthat was the best gift of all.
*Fade to black.*
